WHO CAN SAVE DENVER FROM BECOMING THE BROWNS? BRONCOS QUARTERBACK QUARREL
By, Vic Lavigne
There is no doubt that this year was an absolute let down for the Denver Broncos. Coming off a
9-7 2016 season, and a no show for the playoffs…changes were made including a change in the
head coach position with the hiring of Vance Joseph along with the resigning of quarterback
Brock Osweiler. Leading everyone to the idea that 2017 was going to be an optimistic year for
Denver. Well…here we are in November, once again watching teams that aren’t the Broncos,
prepare for the playoffs. So, what’s next? Do we take a quarterback in the first round and send up
yet another prayer that he will take this team to the playoffs? Or perhaps we stick with what we
have and hope a leader emerges between Seimian, Osweiler and Lynch? Here are my two key
things the Broncos need to do this off season to promote success in 2018.
First, not drafting a quarterback in the first round. As we’ve seen with Paxton Lynch, drafting a
first-round quarterback would not be the answer to the problems we face. Though there is a
decent amount of talent regarding QB’s in the upcoming draft (Mayfield, Rosen, Allen), they
cannot solve the issues at hand. At the end of the day, how much success have we seen from first
round QB’s over the last decade? Look at all the 19 first round QB’s drafted in the last 10 years,
except for maybe 5 of these players (Wentz, Ryan, Newton, Luck, and Flacco), it’s safe to say
that none of them have shown a great amount of success. So why in the world would the Broncos
go out and spend millions of dollars and waste a draft pick, by gambling away at a quarterback
who statistically has very slim odds of being any good?
Second, decide early. Before this season we saw a long QB battle that never seemed to end,
especially once the season had really kicked off. After a big win over the Cowboys, Seimian
seemed to have the job all wrapped up once again, and then everything got flipped back to the
beginning of training camp. With losses to several sub-par teams like the Giants, and the
Bengals, we began to see this odd and honestly confusing rotation start between QBs. Next year
however, the Broncos need to pick one guy and stick with him…and honestly, that one guy
needs to be Brock Osweiler. Yes, he has struggled some in the last two years, but let’s not forget
who we must credit for those crucial wins during that 2015 Super Bowl run, not to mention he
had some solid performances this year…including Denver’s late season win over the Colts in
which he threw for 2 TDs and 194 yards. From what I have seen, Brock has tremendous
potential, but the only way that you can tap into said potential is by giving him a chance…and by
a chance I don’t mean one game, I mean several. It’s the only way to test a QB’s worth…which
was never done this season and it’s the reason the Broncos struggled so much.
There is no doubt that something needs to be done this off season within this Broncos
organization…in fact many things need to be done. But, as far as the quarterback problem is
concerned…a first rounder is not the option, giving Osweiler a chance to win some games is
though.
